Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Announces Plans for
Water Safety Month
Riverdale, Md. – The Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County celebrates May as National Water Safety Month. The month-long annual awareness campaign highlights water safety education and the importance of access to learn-to-swim programs in the community. Drowning is a leading cause of death in children ages 1-4 years old according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Children not exposed to swimming and water safety are more likely to drown than children who have taken swimming lessons and water safety courses,” said Tara Eggleston Stewart, Aquatics and Athletic Facilities Division Chief at the Department. “Learning to swim, becoming water competent, and participating in water safety can play a vital role in changing these statistics in Prince George’s County.”
Parents are invited to participate in Water Safety for Parents and Caregivers, a free online course from the American Red Cross to help develop awareness of risks and how to minimize the danger of drowning or water-related injuries, especially for young children.
Be prepared and safe this summer. The Department offers swim lessons for all ages and skill levels. Learn how to be safe in and around the water by registering for swim lessons here.

Aquatics Job Fair – May 12, 12- 4 pm
The Department is looking for dedicated people to join the aquatics team. Join us at the Prince George’s County Sports & Learning Complex for an Aquatics Job Fair. Come prepared to meet our facility managers, interview for an immediate job opportunity, and complete the in-water pre-course skills assessment for free lifeguard training. Positions available include lifeguards, water fitness instructors, water safety instructors, pool managers, swim lesson aids, and customer service representatives. Water Safety Sessions – May 14
Join us at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex for free water safety information during the 12:45pm, 1:45pm, and 2:45 pool safety break in the Wet Classroom. Pool Reservations – Beginning May 21
Outdoor pools open May 28 for the Summer 2022 season. Due to the popularity of the Department’s outdoor pools, we encourage patrons to make advanced reservations via Parks Direct up to seven days prior to their visit. Drop-in/day of admission will also be available up to the pool’s operating capacity.
