Echoes of the Enslaved is an annual commemoration seeking to highlight local archeological discoveries and address the lasting legacies of chattel slavery in Prince George’s County through conversation and connection. Concord Historic Site is the host for this year’s event, a former tobacco plantation-turned-center of African American resilience and legacy. Join us under the light of the harvest moon to reflect on the skills and traditions that enabled African Americans to find their way in the natural environment.
The evening will feature hands-on educational activities, a panel of acclaimed speakers, and intimate fireside conversations centering Concord’s evolving interpretation of Black history, land stewardship, and community legacy.

What should I bring for the overnight camping addition?
Please bring your own sleeping arrangements. Concord will NOT be providing tents or sleeping bags.

The Concord Manor and outbuildings are undergoing restoration. Please bring your own portable power banks for charging personal devices. Water will be provided.
I’ve never been camping before. Can I still stay the night?
Yes! This event is for all levels of outdoors-people. Please come prepared with the supplies listed above. We will all be camping in the same area and no one will be isolated from the group. Our Outdoor Afro leaders will be on site to help you find a good location, pitch your tent, and answer any other questions for beginner and experienced campers alike.
Will there be food?
Yes, dinner will be provided to all participants while supplies last. Those who choose to stay the night will be served light refreshments in the morning. Contact the site to discuss any dietary restrictions.
Can I bring my own food?
Food trucks will be on site to provide free meals up to a certain point in the program. After this, you will have the option to purchase food. You’re welcome to bring your own food as well. We recommend food that can be chilled in a cooler or kept in your vehicle should you choose to bring your own food.
Is there a parking fee?
No, parking is free. First row of parking will be reserved for accessibility.
Is smoking permitted since the event is outdoors?
No, smoking is not permitted. All outdoor parks in Prince George’s County with the Department of Parks and Recreation are smoke-free to promote a healthy environment for everyone. You can read more about it here.
Is this event suitable for children?
Yes! This event is free and open to all ages. Parents and guardians must provide supervision at all times.

Outdoor Afro: Outdoor Afro celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature. Our national not-for-profit organization reconnects Black people to our lands, water, and wildlife through outdoor education, recreation, and conservation. Some examples of Outdoor Afro’s year-round activities range from fishing, hiking, biking, and kayaking to gardening, skiing, and more.
