Artist Talk and Reception

In early 2024, two local artists, Marilyn Gates- and Lamont Wes Harvey, were commissioned to paint scenes and portraits to help interpret the history of the enslaved of Montpelier. After engaging with the spaces where the enslaved lived and worked, and reading some of their challenging, harrowing, and joyful experiences, Marilyn and Lamont have created imagery that brings the stories of the enslaved to the forefront to be uplifted and exalted. You are invited to be a guest at the artists’ talk and reception. Be part of the unveiling.

Platinum Film: Chevalier

This 2022 film, directed by Stephen Willams, is based on the factual story of French-Caribbean musician Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the illegitimate son of an African enslaved and a French plantation owner, who rises to heights in French society as a composer before an ill-fated love affair. The film stars Kelvin Harrison Jr., Samara Weaving, and Lucy Boynton. Rated PG-13 | Run time: 1h 48m.

Celebrate the end of summer by experimenting with natural dyes. Learn how colonists in the 18th century used natural coloring agents to dye wool and cloth. Join us in the Kitchen Garden as we look at plants and how they were used to color our world in the colonial period. Put your engineering skills to the test by building a sturdy, but beautiful structure. Participants will receive instruction and everything they need to build their graham cracker creation. This program kicks off Darnall’s Chance House Museum’s celebration of the 25th anniversary of its Gingerbread House Contest & Show.
