Prince George’s County is certified by the Maryland Historical Trust and the National Park Service to participate in the National Register nomination process. In its role as a Certified Local Government, Prince George’s County is charged with an initial assessment of the National Register eligibility of the resource and the sufficiency of the nomination documentation. The Prince George’s County Historic Preservation Commission and the County Executive will make recommendations to the Maryland Historical Trust, which administers the National Register program as the State Historic Preservation Office for Maryland. If both the Historic Preservation Commission and the County Executive oppose the nomination, the process will stop unless an appeal is filed with the State Historic Preservation Officer. If either of these recommends nomination, the documentation will be forwarded to the Maryland Historical Trust for further processing. At a later date in the nomination process, the Maryland Historical Trust will offer you the opportunity to comment again and to submit letters of support or objection if you so desire.
You may contact the Commission to see a copy of the Commission meeting agenda, the nomination documentation, the criteria used for evaluation, information about the effects of listing, and information on the Certified Local Government involvement in the National Register nomination process. Please contact Tom Gross, Historic Preservation Section Planning Supervisor, Prince George’s County Planning Department, at Thomas.Gross@ppd.mncppc.org or 240-573-2585. African American History Online Map Application

This application maps Prince George's County-designated historic sites where notable and everyday people worked, learned, worshiped, and lived. It also maps Prince George's County-designated historic sites of resistance to the subjugation that African American Prince Georgians endured under slavery and segregation. The application can be found here under the “African American History” tab.

Tax Credits for Improvements to Historic Resources
As of December 21, 2017, the amortization period for the County’s historic property tax credit program has been extended from five years to ten years. CB-48-2017, proposed by Councilmember Deni Taveras and introduced by the full Council, was adopted by the Prince George’s County Council on October 24, 2017 and signed into law by County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III on November 3, 2017. This new provision allows owners of historic resources who participate in the County’s program, more time to realize the property tax-based refunds available for rehabilitation or restoration expenses approved by the Historic Preservation Commission.
